Vicarious Trauma
This is a proactive presentation about the effects exposure to trauma and stress can have on service providers and the things we can do to protect ourselves. As well as addressing vicarious trauma directly, we will include conversation about stress management, compassion fatigue, and burnout. The focus will primarily be on awareness and strategies for maintaining our own health and compassion as we serve others. Content areas are as follows:
1. What is vicarious trauma? Let’s define it.
2. How to recognize vicarious trauma in self and in others
3. How do we understand it (context, culture and causes)
4. How do we recognize and reduce high risk of being effected by vicarious trauma,
5. How do we deal with it (basic trauma informed skills),
6. Change Commitments: making a proactive protective plan as a service provider.
